Malawi Children Develop Entrepreneurial Skills at After School Program
HELP Malawi is not only committed to academics at Nanthomba Primary School, but also equipping their students with marketable entrepreneurial skills that promote Community Economic Empowerment.
Tinsmith
In Malawi tinsmith work is known to be for men but Nanthomba School brings a difference. A total of nine students, both boys and girls, are able to make pots, pails, washing basins, watering canes and many more right at the school. Some students already started relieving their parents from buying new pails and pots every time they are worn out – by mending them.
Necklace Making
Using just recycled paper, students are able to create one-of-a-kind beads that they then form into well-crafted, unique necklace. The children are shown how to use disposable materials (that would otherwise be thrown out) to generate funds that directly benefit their school. Due to the high quality of the necklaces made by the students, the pieces are always in demand by both locals and tourists. Income realized from the sales of these products is re-invested to sustain the activities.
