Clean, Safe Water
HELP is committed to providing safe and clean water to the children at Nanthomba Primary School. The existing borehole, a local well source near the Nanthomba Primary School, was not being used due to the high salt content in its water. Drinking the water provided by the well could lead to dehydration as well as additional health risks. In October of 2007, the Fischer family from Wisconsin made a generous donation that has allowed for the completion of a replacement borehole on the school grounds, supplying the children with safe and clean water to drink. HELP is also working
to provide corn-based biodegradable water bottles to the children and local villagers, enabling them to carry fresh water with them throughout the day.
In the Spring of 2009, eight tanks of 500 liters per tank, were installed on the side of the each classroom with the main purpose of collecting the useful runoff water during a heavy rainfall. This water serves many purposes ranging from irrigating the school gardens during the dry season, to creating drinking water for the students (after treatment). The water also is used for domestic purposes in the teacher’s homes.
Two additional water tanks of 1000 liters were raised approximately six meters to distribute the solar-pumped water into the teacher’s houses. The complete installation of the solar-water pump is expected to be done within the first quarter of the next fiscal year.
