Performing Arts
Music and theater have an important role in Malawian Culture. Like most counties in Sub-Saharan Africa, Malawian history and folklore has traditionally been passed down by “Griots” or story-tellers that would often use dance and music to tell their tales. Norms, mores and values were also spread this way.
HELP incorporates these cultural traits into education with music and drama. Staff trained local musicians at a private music school so that members of the community themselves could train the students. HELP also sent the local drama troupe for training under the National Aids Commission. The musicians, the drama troupe and the students perform songs, dances and skits to spread awareness about important issues. Together, they educate communities on a wide array of topics including the prevention of HIV/AIDS, the importance of education, civic responsibility and positive cultural values.
With the assistance and guidance of HELP, local students have gotten together to form a drama group. They are a fun source of entertainment throughout the villages and often times hundreds will come to see their shows. Most importantly though, all of their skits have a purpose and aim to empower and educate. They have been trained by the National AIDS Committee and as a result are able to speak on issues such as safe sex, and the pitfalls of drugs and alcohol. They continue to play an important role throughout the community.
