Scholarship Program
Sponsor a Secondary School Student
We believe the key to development in Malawi and the entire developing world is Education. Our goal is to see the children from the area go from primary school through university. HELP has created a superior primary education at the Nanthomba Full Primary School and its partner schools, but it relies on scholarships to ensure that its primary school graduates are able to continue their education. As HELP’s network of primary schools continues to improve, more students are graduating every year. It is HELP’s vision to have 100% of Nanthomba Full Primary School graduates attend Secondary School.
Scholarships on the Rise
With help from our good friends Louise Swart and the Wolvega Community, HELP distributed over 20 scholarships in 2010 , 43 in 2011 and 82 in 2012.
Everybody deserves the opportunity to move beyond their circumstance and achieve better things. At H.E.L.P., every child who graduates from primary school, has the opportunity to continue their education through our school scholarship program.
Getting to Secondary School: What does it Take?
Malawian students take an exit exam at the end of their primary education. If they score in the top percentiles they will be selected to a government secondary school. Earning the right to go to one of these schools is one of the highest honors a young Malawian can receive.
Secondary school tuition for each student is only $180 a year ($720 for all four years), which includes examination fees, a bike, uniform, medical care and some basic school supplies. While this number may seem small to us, it is often more than half of the average Malawian household’s annual income.
How You Can Give
For $180 a student is supported for one year and for $720 a student is supported for four years of secondary school.
