Scholarship Program
Sponsor a Secondary School Student
We believe the key to development in Malawi and the entire developing world is Education. Our goal is to see the children from the area go from primary school through university. HELP has created a superior primary education at the Nanthomba Full Primary School and its partner schools, but it relies on scholarships to ensure that its primary school graduates are able to continue their education. As HELP’s network of primary schools continues to improve, more students are graduating every year. It is HELP’s vision to have 100% of Nanthomba Full Primary School graduates attend Secondary School.
Scholarships on the Rise
With help from our good friends Louise Swart and the Wolvega Community, HELP distributed over 20 scholarships in 2010 and 43 in 2011. By 2013, HELP aims to provide scholarships for up to 80 students.
The scholarship program has now been in existence for two years and will expand if the funding increases. We hope to secure enough funds to ensure that every student that graduates from our primary school network has the opportunity to receive a scholarship.
Getting to Secondary School: What does it Take?
Malawian students take an exit exam at the end of their primary education. If they score in the top percentiles they will be selected to a government secondary school. Earning the right to go to one of these schools is one of the highest honors a young Malawian can receive.
Secondary school tuition for each student is less than $100 a year. Add on examination fees, a uniform, a bookbag and some basic school supplies and it still only costs $150. While this number may seem small to us, it is often half of the average Malawian household’s annual income.
How You Can Give
For only $150 you can ensure a child’s education and wellness by covering their school fees, basic school supplies, uniform, book bag, additional fees, and medical budget.
